2021 Toronto Blue Jays season

The 2021 Toronto Blue Jays season was the 45th season of the Toronto Blue Jays franchise. Due to the COVID-19 pandemic and associated travel restrictions, the team played 38 games at their spring training home of TD Ballpark in Dunedin, Florida, instead of returning to their normal home of Rogers Centre in Toronto, with the hope of moving back once Canada–U.S. travel restrictions are eased. The team then began playing their home schedule at Sahlen Field in Buffalo, New York (their home in 2020) in June. On July 30, the Blue Jays returned to Rogers Centre for the first time since the 2019 season. The Blue Jays finished the regular season with a 91–71 record, giving the team their best win percentage since 2015, but did not qualify for the postseason. Opening Day was rescheduled for April 7, one week later than the original March 31 date, affecting two series for each team.Although MLB previously announced that any cancelled games due to the lockout would not be rescheduled, the agreement provides for a complete 162-game season. The three home games against the Tampa Bay Rays were rescheduled to be played in the Rays' two other visits, creating two five-game series, while the series at Baltimore was added to the end of the season.

Toronto Blue Jays

The Toronto Blue Jays are a Canadian professional baseball team based in Toronto. The Blue Jays compete in Major League Baseball (MLB) as a member club of the American League (AL) East division. The team usually plays its home games at Rogers Centre, but due to border restrictions brought about by the COVID-19 pandemic had used TD Ballpark in Dunedin, Florida for April and May of the 2021 season, and Sahlen Field in Buffalo, New York for the 2020 season as well as June and July 2021, returning home to Toronto as of July 30. The name "Blue Jays" originates from the bird of the same name, and blue is also the traditional colour of Toronto's collegiate and professional sports teams including the Maple Leafs (ice hockey) and the Argonauts (Canadian football). In 1976, out of the over 4,000 suggestions, 154 people selected the name "Blue Jays." In addition, the team was originally owned by the Labatt Brewing Company, makers of the popular beer Labatt Blue. Colloquially nicknamed the "Jays", the team's official colours are royal blue, navy blue, red, and white. An expansion franchise, the club was founded in Toronto in 1977. Originally based at Exhibition Stadium, the team began playing its home games at SkyDome upon its opening in 1989. Since 2000, the Blue Jays have been owned by Rogers Communications and in 2004, SkyDome was purchased by that company, which renamed it Rogers Centre. They are the second MLB franchise to be based outside the United States, and currently the only team based outside the U.S. after the first Canadian franchise, the Montreal Expos, became the Washington Nationals in 2005.

Toronto Blue Jays Radio Network

The Toronto Blue Jays Radio Network consists of 21 stations (17 AM, 4 FM) in 7 Canadian provinces broadcasting the team's games in English. At the start of the 2021 season, the radio broadcasts consisted of a simulcast of the audio from the Sportsnet television broadcasts of Blue Jays games, featuring play-by-play announcer Dan Shulman and colour analysts Buck Martinez and Pat Tabler, with Rob Wong and Shoaib Ali serve as on-air hosts. The simulcasts continued through the end of July, after which a dedicated radio broadcast was used with Ben Wagner calling play-by-play. From 2018 to 2020, the radio team consisted of play-by-play announcers Wagner and Mike Wilner. Wagner succeeded longtime radio announcer Jerry Howarth following the latter's retirement, while former radio analyst Joe Siddall moved to the television pregame show. During its all-sports era from 2007 to 2011, Montreal station CKAC broadcast some games in French.
