1995 Seattle Mariners season

The 1995 Seattle Mariners season was the 19th in the history of the franchise. The team finished with a regular season record of 79–66 (.545) to win their first American League West title. They had tied the California Angels for first place, and in the one-game tiebreaker, the Mariners defeated the Angels 9–1 to make the postseason for the first time in franchise history. In the postseason, the Mariners defeated the New York Yankees in the best-of-five American League Division Series after losing the first two games in New York, a series notable for Edgar Martínez' walk-off 11th-inning double in the fifth game. In the League Championship Series with the favored Cleveland Indians, Seattle won the opener at home and the third game on the road, but fell in six games.

2001 Seattle Mariners season

The Seattle Mariners' 2001 season was the 25th since the franchise's inception. The Mariners finished with a 116–46 (.716) record, tying the major league record for wins set by the 1906 Chicago Cubs, and setting the record for wins by an American League team. Of those wins, 59 were by four or more runs, a record for the number of games won by such a margin. They also led the majors in both runs scored and fewest runs allowed. Interestingly, this record-setting team had just lost their "franchise player", Alex Rodriguez, to a record-breaking free agent contract with the Texas Rangers before the season began; and in the two seasons prior had traded away its two future first-ballot Hall of Famers Ken Griffey, Jr. and Randy Johnson. Winning the American League West division, the 2001 season marked the only time the Mariners reached the postseason in consecutive seasons to date, following their wild card berth in 2000. The team went on to defeat the Cleveland Indians in the American League Division Series, but fell to the New York Yankees in five games in the American League Championship Series. The 2001 season was also notable for the Major League debut of star Japanese outfielder Ichiro Suzuki, who led the league in batting average and won both the AL Rookie of the Year and the AL MVP awards. Additionally, the Mariners hosted their second All-Star Game during the season.

2021 Seattle Mariners season

The 2021 Seattle Mariners season was the 45th season in franchise history. The Mariners were playing their 22nd full season (23rd overall) at T-Mobile Park, their home ballpark in Seattle, Washington. The M's entered this season with the longest active playoff drought in the four major North American professional sports leagues, attempting to make their first postseason in twenty years. Seattle is the only current Major League Baseball (MLB) franchise without a World Series appearance. Despite posting a 90–72 record, their best since the 2003 season, the Mariners were eliminated from postseason contention for the 20th consecutive season after loss to the Angels, and both the Yankees and Red Sox clinched the two wild card spots on the last day of the season. This season was the second time during their drought that they’d won two more regular season games than the World Series champions.

List of Seattle Mariners seasons

The Seattle Mariners have completed 45 seasons of professional baseball in the West division of Major League Baseball (MLB)'s American League (AL) since they began play in 1977. From April 6, 1977 until June 27, 1999, the Mariners played in Seattle's Kingdome. Since July 15, 1999, the Mariners have played at T-Mobile Park (formerly Safeco Field). Their name reflects their home city's coastal and marine culture. An expansion team created as a result of a breach of contract lawsuit involving the Seattle Pilots' 1969 departure after just one year in Seattle, the Mariners finished each of their first fourteen seasons with a losing record. However, after Seattle won its division and a playoff berth for the first time in 1995, they have enjoyed sporadic success, making the playoffs three more times but never advancing beyond the American League Championship Series (ALCS); the team has not been to the playoffs since 2001, when they tied an MLB record winning 116 games; this is the longest current drought in MLB and in all of the major league North American sports.

Seattle Mariners

The Seattle Mariners are an American professional baseball team based in Seattle. They compete in Major League Baseball (MLB) as a member club of the American League (AL) West division. The team joined the American League as an expansion team in 1977 playing their home games in the Kingdome. Since July 1999, the Mariners' home ballpark has been T-Mobile Park, located in the SoDo neighborhood of Seattle. The "Mariners" name originates from the prominence of marine culture in the city of Seattle. They are nicknamed the M's, a title featured in their primary logo from 1987 to 1992. They adopted their current team colors – navy blue, northwest green (teal), and silver – prior to the 1993 season, after having been royal blue and gold since the team's inception. Their mascot is the Mariner Moose. The organization did not field a winning team until 1991, and any real success eluded them until 1995 when they won their first division championship and defeated the New York Yankees in the ALDS. The game-winning hit in Game 5, in which Edgar Martínez drove home Ken Griffey Jr. to win the game in the 11th inning, clinched a series win for the Mariners, served as a powerful impetus to preserve baseball in Seattle, and has since become an iconic moment in team history.

The Double (Seattle Mariners)

The Double was a double hit by the Seattle Mariners' Edgar Martínez in Game 5 of Major League Baseball's 1995 American League Division Series on October 8, 1995. Trailing by one run in the bottom half of the 11th inning, with Joey Cora on third base and Ken Griffey Jr. on first, Martinez's hit drove in Cora and Griffey, giving the Mariners a 6–5 victory over the New York Yankees to clinch the series, 3–2. The play is held to be the "biggest hit in franchise history".Amid rumors that the team would be sold and/or relocated, the Mariners—who had produced only two winning seasons (1991 and 1993) since beginning play in 1977—mounted a late-season comeback in 1995 to clinch their first postseason appearance in franchise history. They then mounted a series of comebacks in the ALDS, first overcoming a 2-game series deficit to force a deciding Game 5, then tying Game 5 in the 8th inning to force extra innings, and finally a one-run 11th inning deficit that was overcome by the Double. The hit is regarded as the defining moment of Martinez's 18-year Hall of Fame career. Mariners broadcaster Dave Niehaus' call of the play—which is equally memorable to Seattle fans as the play itself—is also regarded as the highlight of his career. The play is also credited with keeping a Major League Baseball team in the city of Seattle, as it helped garner support for a new taxpayer-funded stadium for the Mariners. That stadium, known today as T-Mobile Park (it was originally known as Safeco Field through the end of the 2018 season), opened in 1999, with the Double depicted in a mural as part of the stadium's art collection.
