1976 Philadelphia Flyers–Red Army game

The Flyers–Red Army game was a famous international ice hockey game played on January 11, 1976, between the Philadelphia Flyers of the North America-based National Hockey League (NHL), and HC CSKA Moscow (Central Sports Club of the Army Moscow, Russian: ХК ЦСКА Москва, also known as the "Red Army Team") of the Soviet Union. The game was notable for an incident where, after a body check delivered by the Flyers' Ed Van Impe, CSKA's top player, Valeri Kharlamov, was prone on the ice for a minute. Van Impe had skated directly from the penalty box to the CSKA player and the replay suggests he elbowed Kharlamov in the head. When officials did not call a penalty, the Red Army coach, Konstantin Loktev, pulled his team off the ice in protest. It is believed by some that Flyers' Chairman Ed Snider told CSKA to return to the ice and finish the game, which was being broadcast to an international audience, or the Soviet Hockey Federation would not get paid the fee to which they were entitled. However, according to NHL President Clarence Campbell, he denied he ever told Koloskov or Loktev about the money. Campbell said “Somebody on the periphery mentioned it, that's all." Ed Snider admitted he was on the periphery yelling to Campbell "tell them they won't get paid." Campbell and Alan Eagleson were first to arrive outside the dressing room to speak to Loktev and Koloskov. Snider joined them later. Eagleson commended the way Koloskov was able to convince Loktev to return the team to the ice. Matt Pavelich who was the linesman at that game approached the Soviet bench and saw Clarence Campbell and Alan Eagleson heading to the Soviet dressing room and did not see Ed Snider going with them. They eventually complied and lost 4–1.

Parent and Hextall account for two of the three Flyers goaltenders to win the Vezina Trophy, Parent in 1973–74 and 1974–75, Pelle Lindbergh in 1984–85, and Hextall in 1986–87. The Philadelphia Flyers are a professional ice hockey team based in Philadelphia. They compete in the National Hockey League (NHL) as a member of the Metropolitan Division in the Eastern Conference. Part of the 1967 NHL Expansion, the Flyers were the first expansion team in the post–Original Six era to win the Stanley Cup, victorious in 1973–74 and again in 1974–75. The Flyers' all-time points percentage of 57.5% (as of the 2021–22 NHL season) is the third-best in the NHL, behind only the Vegas Golden Knights and Montreal Canadiens. Additionally, the Flyers have the most appearances in the conference finals of all 24 expansion teams (16 appearances, winning 8), and they are second behind the St. Louis Blues for the most playoff appearances out of all expansion teams (40 out of 52 seasons). The Flyers have played their home games on Broad Street since their inception, first at the Spectrum from 1967 until 1996, and then at the Wells Fargo Center since 1996. The Flyers have had rivalries with several teams over the years. Historically, their biggest adversaries have been the New York Rangers, with an intense rivalry stretching back to the 1970s. They have also waged lengthy campaigns against the New York Islanders in the 1970s and 1980s, the Boston Bruins, a bruising battle especially in the 1970s, the Washington Capitals, which has always been intense since their days in the Patrick Division, as well as the New Jersey Devils, with whom they traded the Atlantic Division title every season between 1994–95 and 2006–07, and finally they enjoy a spirited rivalry with their cross-state and expansion brethren, the Pittsburgh Penguins, which is considered by some to be the best rivalry in the league.
