2021 Boston Red Sox season

The 2021 Boston Red Sox season was the 121st season in the team's history, and their 110th season at Fenway Park. The team entered the offseason conducting a managerial search, after declining to bring back Ron Roenicke from the shortened 2020 season. On November 6, 2020, the team re-hired Alex Cora as manager; Cora had skippered the Red Sox in 2018 and 2019, then sat out 2020 serving a one-year suspension for his role in the Houston Astros sign stealing scandal in 2017.This was the Red Sox' first season since 2019 with fans at Fenway Park, with a limited capacity of approximately 4,500 to start the season due to the ongoing COVID-19 pandemic. The capacity was increased to approximately 9,400 for games after May 10. Fenway returned to full capacity starting May 29, with an announced attendance of 25,089 at that day's game. The first home sellout of the season was the June 25 game against the New York Yankees, with an announced attendance of 36,869.On June 4–6, the Red Sox swept a three-game series against the rival Yankees at Yankee Stadium for the first time since June 2011. On June 13, the Toronto Blue Jays set a single-game record for home runs by a visiting team at Fenway Park, with eight. In early July, the Red Sox led MLB with five players selected to the All-Star Game. Beginning in late August, the team had a spate of positive COVID-19 testing, resulting in more than 10 players being placed on the COVID-related injured list. The Red Sox finished the regular season with a 92–70 record and qualified for the postseason as the fourth seed in the American League (AL), defeating the fifth-seed Yankees in the AL Wild Card Game at Fenway Park on October 5. They then defeated the Tampa Bay Rays in the AL Division Series, 3–1 games.

2022 Boston Red Sox season

The 2022 Boston Red Sox season is the ongoing 122nd season in Boston Red Sox franchise history, and their 111th season at Fenway Park. The team is led by Alex Cora, in the second season of his second stint as the team's manager. The team's regular season was originally scheduled to open on March 31, with a home game against the Tampa Bay Rays, and conclude on October 2, with an away game against the Toronto Blue Jays. On December 2, 2021, Commissioner of Baseball Rob Manfred announced a lockout of players, following expiration of the collective bargaining agreement (CBA) between Major League Baseball (MLB) and the Major League Baseball Players Association (MLBPA). On March 10, 2022, MLB and the MLBPA agreed to a new collective bargaining agreement, thus ending the lockout. Opening Day was then scheduled for April 7 as an away game against the New York Yankees, but it was postponed to April 8 because of inclement weather. Boston's season is now scheduled to end with a home game on October 5 against Tampa Bay. Although MLB previously announced that several series would be cancelled due to the lockout, the new CBA provides for a 162-game season, with originally canceled games to be made up via doubleheaders. The Red Sox entered the 2022 season having reached the 2021 ALCS where they fell two wins short of appearing in the World Series. After compiling a 23–27 record through the end of May, the team went 20–6 during June, only to fall back under .500 in the second half of July. Injuries to multiple players and roster challenges, including a lack of offensive production at the first base position, hampered the team.

Boston Red Sox

The Boston Red Sox are an American professional baseball team based in Boston. The Red Sox compete in Major League Baseball (MLB) as a member club of the American League (AL) East division. Founded in 1901 as one of the American League's eight charter franchises, the Red Sox' home ballpark has been Fenway Park since 1912. The "Red Sox" name was chosen by the team owner, John I. Taylor, circa 1908, following the lead of previous teams that had been known as the "Boston Red Stockings", including the forerunner of the Atlanta Braves. The team has won nine World Series championships, tied for the third-most of any MLB team, and has played in 13 World Series. Their most recent World Series appearance and win was in 2018. In addition, they won the 1904 American League pennant, but were not able to defend their 1903 World Series championship when the New York Giants refused to participate in the 1904 World Series. The Red Sox were a dominant team in the new league, defeating the Pittsburgh Pirates in the first World Series in 1903 and winning four more championships by 1918. However, they then went into one of the longest championship droughts in baseball history, dubbed the "Curse of the Bambino" after its alleged inception due to the Red Sox' sale of Babe Ruth to the rival New York Yankees two years after their World Championship in 1918. The Sox endured an 86-year wait before the team's sixth World Championship in 2004.

Yankees–Red Sox rivalry

The Yankees–Red Sox rivalry is a Major League Baseball (MLB) rivalry between the New York Yankees and the Boston Red Sox. Both teams have competed in MLB's American League (AL) for over 120 seasons and have since developed what is arguably the fiercest rivalry in all of American sports. In 1919, Red Sox owner Harry Frazee sold star player Babe Ruth to the Yankees, which was followed by an 86-year period in which the Red Sox did not win a World Series. This led to the popularization of a superstition known as the "Curse of the Bambino,” which was one of the most well-known aspects of the rivalry. The rivalry is often a heated subject of conversation, especially in the home region of both teams, the Northeastern United States. Until the 2014 season, every season's postseason had featured one or both of the AL East rivals since the inception of the wild card format and the resultant additional Division Series in 1995; they have faced each other in the AL Championship Series (ALCS) three times. The Yankees won twice, in 1999 and 2003; while the Red Sox won in 2004. The two teams have also met once in the AL Division Series (ALDS), in 2018, with Boston winning 3–1, a series which included a 16–1 Red Sox win in Game 3 at Yankee Stadium, the most lopsided postseason loss for the Yankees in their history. In addition, the teams have twice met in the last regular-season series of a season to decide the league title, in 1904 (when the Red Sox, then known as the Americans, won) and 1949 (when the Yankees won). The Yankees and the Red Sox finished tied for first in 1978; subsequently, the Yankees won a high-profile tie-breaker game for the division title. The first-place tie came after the Red Sox had a 14-game lead over the Yankees more than halfway through the season. Similarly, in the 2004 ALCS, the Yankees ultimately lost a best-of-7 series after leading 3–0.
