2021 Baltimore Orioles season

The 2021 Baltimore Orioles season was the 121st season in Baltimore Orioles franchise history, the 68th in Baltimore, and the 30th at Oriole Park at Camden Yards. They have significantly failed at attempting to improve on their 25–35 (.417) record from the previous year. The Orioles threw their first no-hitter since 1969 on May 5, in the 6–0 win over the Mariners. Despite this, the Orioles have stayed near the bottom of the league and they endured a 14-game losing streak between the middle and the end of May. The Orioles pitching staff combined for a team ERA of 5.84, the worst in Orioles history. The 14-game losing streak was since surpassed in August, joining the 2005 Royals in losing 19 consecutive games, which the losing streak ended on August 25th. The Orioles were eliminated from playoff contention on August 28th with their loss to the Tampa Bay Rays. They suffered their 3rd 100+ loss season in four years with their loss to the Boston Red Sox on September 17th. With the Orioles loss in the season finale against the Blue Jays, they suffered their second 110-loss season in team history; it was also the third such season in overall franchise history, going back to their time as the St. Louis Browns.

Baltimore Orioles

The Baltimore Orioles are an American professional baseball team based in Baltimore. The Orioles compete in Major League Baseball (MLB) as a member club of the American League (AL) East division. As one of the American League's eight charter teams in 1901, the franchise spent its first year as a major league club in Milwaukee, Wisconsin, as the Milwaukee Brewers before moving to St. Louis, Missouri, to become the St. Louis Browns in 1902. After 52 years in St. Louis, the franchise was purchased in November 1953 by a syndicate of Baltimore business and civic interests led by attorney and civic activist Clarence Miles and Mayor Thomas D'Alesandro Jr. The team's current owner is American trial lawyer Peter Angelos. The Orioles adopted their team name in honor of the official state bird of Maryland; it had been used previously by several baseball clubs in the city, including another AL charter member franchise also named the "Baltimore Orioles", which moved north to New York in 1903 to eventually become the Yankees. Nicknames for the team include the "O's" and the "Birds".

Baltimore Orioles (1882–1899)

The Baltimore Orioles were a 19th-century professional baseball team that competed from 1882 to 1899, first in the American Association and later in the National League. This early Orioles franchise, which featured numerous future inductees to the National Baseball Hall of Fame, finished in first place for three consecutive seasons (1894–1896) and won the Temple Cup national championship series in 1896 and 1897. Despite their success, the dominant Orioles were contracted out of the National League after the 1899 season, when the league reduced in size from 12 members to eight. Upon the foundation of the American League in 1901, a reorganized Baltimore Orioles franchise competed as a charter member, before relocating to New York City after two seasons.

List of Baltimore Orioles seasons

The Baltimore Orioles, formerly the St. Louis Browns, are an American professional baseball franchise currently based in Baltimore, Maryland. They were founded in 1894 as the Milwaukee Brewers of the Western League and joined the American League (AL) in 1901, before relocating to St. Louis the following season – a move planned by the league several years before its fruition. The Browns generally struggled in their early years as a Major League team, never finishing higher than fourth before 1921, and in fact having only eight winning seasons before World War II. They lost over 100 games five times, and in 1939 set an unenviable MLB record for the highest earned run average against a team on record at just over 6.00 per nine innings. They did not play in a World Series until 1944 – when most other teams were decimated by the war – and had no winning seasons between 1946 and their sixth season in Baltimore as the "Orioles" in 1959. Starting in 1960, the Orioles became contenders, finishing in second place in 1960 and third place in 1961, 1964 and 1965. After this, however, the Orioles entered their golden age between 1966 and 1983, when they won three World Series, played in the postseason eight times, and had eighteen consecutive winning seasons between 1968 and 1985. The period from 1986 to 2011, however, was another era of failure apart from a short period in the middle 1990s. The Orioles played in the postseason only twice over twenty-eight seasons and suffered fourteen successive losing seasons between 1998 and 2011, before in 2012 surprisingly winning 93 games and their first playoff series since 1997.

New York Yankees

The New York Yankees are an American professional baseball team based in the New York City borough of the Bronx. The Yankees compete in Major League Baseball (MLB) as a member club of the American League (AL) East division. They are one of two major league clubs based in New York City, the other being the National League's (NL) New York Mets. The Yankees began play in the 1901 season as the Baltimore Orioles (no relation to the modern Baltimore Orioles). In 1903, Frank Farrell and Bill Devery purchased the franchise after it ceased operations and moved it to New York City, renaming the club the New York Highlanders. The Highlanders were officially renamed the New York Yankees in 1913.The team is owned by Yankee Global Enterprises, an LLC that is controlled by the family of the late George Steinbrenner, who purchased the team in 1973. Brian Cashman is the team's general manager, and Aaron Boone is the team's field manager. The team's home games were played at the original Yankee Stadium from 1923 to 1973 and from 1976 to 2008. In 1974 and 1975, the Yankees shared Shea Stadium with the Mets, in addition to the New York Jets and the New York Giants. In 2009, they moved into a new ballpark of the same name that was constructed adjacent to the previous facility, which was closed and demolished.
