2021–22 Arizona Coyotes season

The 2021–22 Arizona Coyotes season was the 43rd season for the National Hockey League (NHL) franchise that was established on June 22, 1979, the 26th season since the franchise relocated from Winnipeg following the 1995–96 NHL season, and the 50th overall season, including the World Hockey Association years. The Coyotes returned to the Central Division for the 2021–22 season. The franchise was previously part of this division from the time of its formation in 1993 (when the team was still based in Manitoba) through to the end of its second season in Arizona in 1998. The modern Winnipeg Jets are also in the Central, thus for the first time that city's original NHL franchise will be in the same division as its current team. The league's new expansion team the Seattle Kraken took the Coyotes' place in the Pacific Division. This was the Coyotes' final season at Gila River Arena, as the city of Glendale decided not to renew the team's operating agreement with the city. The Coyotes finished with 57 points, the worst record in the whole Western Conference. They were eliminated from playoff contention following a 6–1 loss to the Edmonton Oilers on March 28, 2022. The Coyotes closed Gila River Arena by beating the Predators, 5-4, after trailing 4-0, in the season finale. Coincidentally, the Predators beat the then-Phoenix Coyotes, 3-1, in their first home game at Gila River Arena on December 27, 2003. It was known as Glendale Arena at the time.

Arizona Coyotes

The Arizona Coyotes are a professional ice hockey team based in the Phoenix metropolitan area. The Coyotes compete in the National Hockey League (NHL) as a member of the Central Division in the Western Conference and currently play at the ASU Multi-Purpose Arena in Tempe. They first played at America West Arena (now Footprint Center) in downtown Phoenix from 1996 to 2003 and then played at Glendale's Gila River Arena from 2003 to 2022. Founded on December 27, 1971, as the Winnipeg Jets of the World Hockey Association (WHA), they were one of four franchises absorbed into the NHL after the WHA had ceased operations, joining on June 22, 1979. The Jets moved to Phoenix on July 1, 1996, and were renamed the Phoenix Coyotes. The franchise name changed to the Arizona Coyotes on June 27, 2014. Alex Meruelo became the majority owner on July 29, 2019.The team was unstable under earlier ownership. The NHL took over the Phoenix Coyotes franchise in 2009, when then-owner Jerry Moyes gave up the team after declaring bankruptcy. The NHL maintained control of the team until 2013 when they found new ownership willing to keep the franchise in Arizona. Despite a difficult working relationship with the city of Glendale and its Gila River Arena, the Coyotes were able to secure a year-to-year arrangement to play in the facility until the end of the 2021–22 season.

List of National Hockey League retired numbers

This is a complete list of numbers retired by the National Hockey League (NHL). A retired number is a jersey number that is taken out of circulation by a team as a way of honouring a former member of that team who wore that number; after the number's retirement, members of that team are not permitted to wear the number on their jerseys unless by permission of the original number holder. The first team to retire a number was the Toronto Maple Leafs, which retired Ace Bailey's number 6 on February 14, 1934, prior to an All-Star game organized in his honour. The NHL currently has 131 retired numbers, 7 former retirements and 23 honoured numbers. Most of the numbers retired by the Hartford Whalers and Quebec Nordiques were put back in circulation when those franchises relocated and became the Carolina Hurricanes and Colorado Avalanche, respectively, although the Hurricanes keep Gordie Howe's number 9 unofficially retired. The Minnesota North Stars' two retired numbers were carried over when that franchise relocated to become the Dallas Stars, and remain retired today. The Arizona Coyotes had a policy of retaining the numbers retired when the franchise was the Winnipeg Jets but reversed it after the Phoenix Coyotes were sold and became the Arizona Coyotes; these were retroactively classified as honoured numbers as part of the Arizona Coyotes Ring of Honor. Honoured numbers are similar to retired numbers, except that they remain available for use by other players. Presently, only the Calgary Flames, the St. Louis Blues, the Arizona Coyotes and the Winnipeg Jets (the latter honouring the players of the original Jets) employ this designation.

Shane Doan

Shane Albert Doan (born October 10, 1976) is a Canadian professional ice hockey executive and former player currently serving as chief hockey development officer for the Arizona Coyotes of the National Hockey League (NHL). Doan spent the entirety of his 21-season NHL career with the Coyotes franchise, beginning with the Winnipeg Jets in 1995 before playing in Arizona for two decades. He was the last remaining player active in the NHL from the original Winnipeg Jets franchise before he announced his retirement in the summer of 2017. Doan led the Phoenix Coyotes in scoring in every season between 2003 to 2011. In December 2015, Doan became the Coyotes franchise's all-time leading goal scorer. He was also the longest-serving NHL captain until his retirement, serving in that capacity for the Coyotes from 2003 to 2017. Doan never won the Stanley Cup, coming closest when his Phoenix Coyotes lost to the Los Angeles Kings in the 2012 Western Conference Final. In international competition, Doan represented Canada and won five medals (two gold, three silver) at the World Championships. He helped Canada win the World Cup championship in 2004 and was also a member of Canada's 2006 Winter Olympic team. The Coyotes retired Doan's jersey number prior to a game against the current Winnipeg Jets on February 24, 2019.
