History of WWE

The history of WWE dates back to the early 1950s when it was founded in 1953 as Capitol Wrestling Corporation (CWC). It underwent several name changes throughout the years, from World Wide Wrestling Federation (WWWF) in 1963 to World Wrestling Federation (WWF) in 1979, and finally to World Wrestling Entertainment (WWE) in 2002, with the latter being strictly abbreviated to WWE in 2011. WWE is the largest professional wrestling promotion in the world. It has promoted some of the most successful wrestlers and storylines, and featured some of the most iconic and significant matches and moments in the history of sports entertainment. WWE currently airs several high-profile programs such as Raw and SmackDown in more than 150 countries, hosts at least 12 pay-per-view events a year including WrestleMania, and holds approximately 320 live events a year throughout the world. In 2014, WWE launched the first 24/7 streaming network which would eventually showcase the entire WWE video library.

List of WWE pay-per-view and WWE Network events

This is a list of WWE pay-per-view and WWE Network events, detailing all professional wrestling cards promoted on pay-per-view (PPV) and the WWE Network by WWE. WWE has been broadcasting PPV events since the 1980s, when its classic "Big Four" events (Royal Rumble, WrestleMania, SummerSlam, and Survivor Series) were first established. The company's PPV lineup expanded to a monthly basis in the mid-1990s before expanding even further in the mid-2000s. In addition, WWE produced international PPVs not available in the United States between 1997 and 2003. Following WWE's original brand extension in 2002, the company promoted two touring rosters representing its Raw and SmackDown television programs. The traditional "Big Four" continued to showcase the entire roster, while the remaining PPV events alternated between Raw and SmackDown cards. A special ECW PPV in 2005 led to the creation of an ECW brand in 2006, which also received its own dedicated PPV events. In March 2007, WWE announced that all subsequent PPV events would feature performers from all brands. In 2008, all WWE PPV events began broadcasting in high-definition. The company's PPV business began to drastically change with the launch of the WWE Network on February 24, 2014. WWE's focus has shifted away from delivering their events solely on PPV channels, with their main focus now delivering all of the events on the WWE Network as well, including some exclusive events such as NXT Arrival. After the second brand extension in July 2016, brand-exclusive PPVs returned with the "Big Four" as the only PPVs to feature both Raw and SmackDown brands.

The company's global headquarters is located in Stamford, Connecticut, with offices in New York, Los Angeles, London, Mexico City, Mumbai, Shanghai, Singapore, Dubai, Munich, and Tokyo. As in other professional wrestling promotions, WWE shows are not legitimate contests but entertainment-based performance theater, featuring storyline-driven, scripted, and partially-choreographed matches; however, matches often include moves that can put performers at risk of injury, even death, if not performed correctly. The pre-determined aspect of professional wrestling was publicly acknowledged by WWE's owner Vince McMahon in 1989 in order to avoid taxes from athletic commissions. WWE brands its product as sports entertainment, acknowledging wrestling's roots in competitive sport and dramatic theater. The company's majority owner is its chairman and CEO, third-generation wrestling promoter Vince McMahon, who retains a 37.6% ownership of the company's outstanding stock and 80.5% of the voting power. The current entity, which was originally named Titan Sports, Inc., was incorporated on February 21, 1980 in South Yarmouth, Massachusetts. It acquired Capitol Wrestling Corporation Ltd., the holding company for the World Wrestling Federation (WWF), previously known as the World Wide Wrestling Federation (WWWF), in 1982.

The WWE Universal Championship is a world heavyweight championship created and promoted by the American professional wrestling promotion WWE, currently defended on their SmackDown brand division. It is one of WWE's three world titles, alongside the WWE Championship on Raw and the NXT Championship on NXT. The current champion is Roman Reigns, who is in his second reign. Named in honor of the WWE Universe, the championship was established on July 25, 2016 to be the top title of the Raw brand.
